VERDURA RESORT SICILY W hyisthereacopyofThe Leopard, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s classic novel, in every room here? Because Guiseppe was the last Duke of Verdura, whose family owned the land this resort now sits on. Read his masterpiece, but when you feel like a break from the tale there are plenty of other distractions here, even golf. Sir Rocco Forte is so passionate about the game he hired the accomplished course designer Kyle Phillips to create three courses. Add six clay tennis courts and Verdura Resort may be the sportiest hotel in the Rocco Forte collection, if not all of Italy. It’s located on the southwest coast of Sicily, close to the historic fishing port of Sciacca, in the Terre Sicane wine-producing region, where wine had been made in one form or another for thousands of years. Here you can taste Chardonnay if you wish, but don’t head home again without some appreciation of the grape varieties unique to the region, like Nero d’Avola for full-bodied reds and Grillo, the white grape used in the production of Sicily’s signature fortified wine, Marsala. Back at the resort, carr y on reading The Leopard, but at some stage visit the spa, where treatments like hydro-massage are based on naturopathy invented by a 19th- century priest named Sebastian Kneipp, who reportedly cured himself of tuberculosis – although you might find your private hot tub sufficient. Besides wine, the Greek and Romans came here for the thermal pools. Four restaurants, five bars, a private beach and a good book. What more can you wish for? View the stunning Presidential Suite and others on the website.
